Chapter Sixteen

-Kemp-

My gaze darts to Violet sleeping in the back seat of the rental, for the millionth time since we left Moab to drive to Las Vegas. Finally, the worry lines on her forehead have relaxed. They hadn’t left her face since she’d kissed me, and I’m not sure if it’s the peck or the lack of clue to the next challenge that has her worried.

Part of me wants to ask her about that kiss. Sure, it was just a quick touch, but it roared to life all my feelings for her that had simmered under the surface without me knowing. Yes, there’s attraction and a desire to protect, but, more than that, there’s a love I never expected. And it’s not a friendly sort of love, though that’s a big reason for why it’s so strong.

Another part of me is terrified she’ll stick to her silly one-kiss rule. Sorry, I know it’s not silly. She has her reasons, and if she ever tells me why, I’m sure I’ll find them valid.

I guess I’m worried she won’t break that rule. And I’m so desperate for her to take a second chance on me that nervous energy rattles my body. My leg hasn’t stopped bouncing since I slid into the car. If I can just get her to kiss me again, maybe we can make a habit of it. If we make a habit of it, maybe, just maybe, I can convince her to make this fake relationship real.

We crest a hill, and Vegas’s lights fill the horizon. It’s been a long, exhausting day, and I’m hoping this challenge will include a mandatory pit stop. Or at least a long flight when it’s done.

“Vi, we’re getting close.” I reach my hand through the gap in the front seats and jostle her knee.

Did I need to?

Nope.

Did I want the excuse to be close, even for just a second?

Absolutely.

I know. I’m pathetic. Honestly, I don’t even care. Violet’s worth being pathetic for.

Bo snorts a snore next to me in the passenger seat and jerks awake. It’s a good thing he could just mount one of his cameras on the dash and another in the backseat for filming, otherwise he might be fired. Not that there was anything worth broadcasting the last six hours since we left Moab.

“Oh, wow.” Violet gasps from the back and leans over the console. “It’s so beautiful.”

The expanse of lights spreading through the desert valley never fails to impress. To go from desolate interstate to so much brightness makes my palms sweat. I haven’t decided if it’s in excitement or anxiety. After moving to Alaska, cities like Vegas make me itch.

“Yeah. It’s okay.” I turn and look at her profile. “You ready for jostling crowds?”

“Yes.” She cringes. “No. It’s a little terrifying, which is dumb because I’m a grown woman and love people.”

“It’s different from Alaska, even when we get busy in the summer.” I gaze back out the window. “Don’t worry. I’m sure we’ll have a blast.”

Thirty minutes later, we pull into the parking lot for Treasure Island.
